Surf Carnival Gives Bears Hard Edge

The Burleigh Bears top grade squad competed in their own Surf Life Saving Carnival as a build up to the 2013 Intrust Super Cup season last Saturday.

Players competed individually in five events (Beach Sprint, Swim, Paddle Board, Water Running and Iron man) for the honour of being crowned Burleigh Bears Surf Champion.

Colts player Jackson Luke showed some outstanding athletic ability to take out two of the five events but the consistent Danny Kerr was the overall winner. Second place went to Tyron Haynes, while Jamie Anderson finished third.

Burleigh Bears coach Carl Briggs was pleased with the effort put in by the players in stifling conditions.

“The idea of the Surf Carnival was to put players in an unfamiliar environment to see how they reacted,” Briggs said.

“While some players were more familiar than others with the surf, I was impressed by the effort from the entire squad.”

Individual winners:

Beach Sprint - Jackson Luke
Swim - Tyron Haynes
Water Running - Jamie Anderson
Paddle Board - Danny Kerr
Ironman - Jackson Luke
Burleigh Bears Surf Carnival Champion 2013 - Danny Kerr
