Biography

David Shillington became the best front rower in the game in 2010, leading the charge for the great Queensland side of that era, and taking on a senior role in the Australian side.

He was named Dally M Prop of the Year, and won Canberra's Player of the Year award, the Mal Meninga Medal. Shillington played his junior rugby league with Brothers in Brisbane, and attended Padua College. His three brothers, Mark, John and James were also outstanding rugby league players.

After playing Colts for Redcliffe, Shillington signed with the Sydney Roosters and made his NRL debut in 2005, with English Test star, Adrian Morley, his co-prop.

Shillington switched to the Canberra Raiders in 2009, and it was from the nation's capital that he made his State of Origin debut for the Maroons in Game III that year. Shillington also was selected to play for Australia in the 2009 Four Nations Tournament, making his Test debut against England in Wigan.

David has been a quality rugby league player throughout his career but more importantly, he’s been a good role model.

Shillington played all three Origin matches in 2010, and once again represented Australia in the Four Nations, this time on home soil. He missed the 2011 Origin series because of a torn pec, but coach Mal Meninga had no hesitation recalling him in 2012. Shillington made the last of his eight Origin appearances in Game I of the 2013 series. He played 14 Tests between 2009 and 2012.

Shillington signed a two-year deal with Gold Coast Titans at the end of the 2015 season, but announced his retirement at the end of his first campaign with his new club, because of chronic injuries. He played 215 NRL games, 131 of them with the Raiders.

Having always enjoyed giving back to the community, Shillington became Queensland State Manager of the Men Of League Foundation in 2017, and also worked as a project manager for the NRL, with a particular emphasis on mental health.
