The Kawana Dolphins had plenty of reasons to celebrate on Saturday, as club veteran, Paul Cohen, enjoyed a club-record 150th game in the Caloundra RSL Cup with a win over Noosa.

Despite missing several key-players including Jordan Meads and Jason Wardrop, Cohen led the Dolphins to a commanding 60-6 win over the Noosa Pirates to continue their perfect start to 2014.

Cohen, a former Intrust Super Cup premiership player, won’t forget his 150th game in a hurry, kicking eight goals and making a massive break to set up a try before being sidelined after being on the receiving end of a high tackle.

Noosa looked as if they would take advantage of Kawana’s depleted squad, holding the score to nil-all after 20 minutes.

However, when fullback Joseph Bright scored in the 24th minute, the match never looked in doubt, with Kawana cruising to their seventh straight win this season.

Kawana’s dominance has people in Sunshine Coast Rugby League questioning the reasons behind their success.

Club photographer and committee member, Ritchie Jarman, says that rumours circling about Kawana’s payment of players are completely false.

“Our players only get paid a small amount per win,” Jarman said on Saturday.

The club volunteer of 18 years said success hasn’t come easy for the club, with the senior squad lacking enough players to fill a reserve grade side as little as five years ago.

“The reason we’ve had so much success in recent times is because 85% of our squad have come up through the juniors,” he said.

“A lot (of the boys) are school-mates and just mates wanting to play together… they’re all just happy to be here.”

Jarman admitted the squad is aided by plenty of experience gained in stronger competitions such as the NRL U20s and Intrust Super Cup.

“Players like Jordan Meads (Warriors U20s) and Jason Wardrop (Sunshine Coast) just really enjoy playing with their mates,” he claimed.

In other games, the Caloundra Sharks imposed a 64-point shutout of the Bribie Island Warrigals, who still remain winless. Eight Sharks players shared in the tries, with Kenny Stewart racking up an impressive tally of four.

Maroochydore-Coolum recorded their second-straight win, beating the Gympie Devils 32-16. Troy and Luke Mendham both scored tries for the Swans with Brad Reed racking up a double.

Finally, the Caboolture Snakes recorded their fifth win of the season, beating the struggling Nambour Crushers 46-12. Jamie Casey picked up a hat trick with goal-kicker Scott Maddick slotting seven between the sticks.

Kawana sit comfortably at the top of the Caloundra RSL A grade ladder on 14 points, with Maroochydore-Coolum, Caloundra and Caboolture tied for 2nd on 10 points.

The Caloundra RSL A grade cup will take a break over the Easter long weekend, with the competition set to resume on April 26.
