History has been made in the Central West.

Back in the latter months of 2013, the call was put out to women across the central west to start training in league to be part of the Central West women's squad who would compete in the Longreach 7’s carnival in March this year.

Around a dozen brave young women now band together on a regular basis to train each week under the watchful eye of coach/coordinator Tim Penrose. They named themselves “Central West Fillies” and organised sponsors and uniforms. Tim coaxed Charmain Acton to be their team manager and Sue Penrose as the water runner/photographer.

Their hard work and determination finally paid off when they took to the field for the first time against the Clermont squad at the 7’s Carnival on March 1, 2014.

Clermont were fast out of the blocks as they scored a couple of quick tries but the girls settled when Longreach local Brodie Jackson hit through Clermont defence and scored just beside the post. The ladies were elated and went onto to score another try before going down five tries to two – not bad for their first effort.

With guns now blazing, they were fired up for the second match of the day against the Emerald Tigers. After some great defence and line breaks from both sides, the score was locked up at 22 all when the final siren sounded.

The women's matches were part of the Longreach 7’s carnival and not much talk was about how the men played on the day – it was all about the ladies.

The Central West Fillies have gone on to replay Emerald Tigers as part of the Wren Cup Match Day celebrations on March, 15 in Emerald. They were down at half-time 24-6 but fought back to be 24 all with Emerald scoring in the dying minutes of the game to seal the 30-24 result.

The Fillies were then invited to be part of the 2014 Mick Purcival Memorial Shield Day in Clermont on April 5. Unfortunately they were short on numbers for this match and went down 26-6.

The squad hopes to get a game against Roma later in the year and then perhaps a return game or two from the host clubs above. The Fillies wish to thank the community for their support. If any ladies wish to play simply get in contact with Tim Penrose 0429 577 023.
