IN honour of ANZAC Day; the Springfield Panthers JRLFC are hosting an inaugural special junior sport showcase in conjunction with Goodna RSL this Friday at Bob Gibbs Oval.

The tribute is open for all to attend and starts at 2pm with the Goodna RSL sub branch conducting a ceremony honouring our service men and women.

This commemoration will include Australian and New Zealand flags, a ceremonial haka and a playing of the Last Post.

This will be followed by the final round of Recruitment 24/7 Ipswich Junior Rugby League pre-season competitions, starting with Under 11 action from 2.30pm before finishing 11 matches later with the Under 17s.

It is believed this is a first-of-its-kind event for junior rugby league in Ipswich and will not only showcase some of the great local talent but also show respect for the freedom our fallen heroes made the ultimate sacrifice for.

There will be volunteers carrying tins for patrons to donate coins on the day, with all funds raised going to Goodna RSL.

Springfield Panthers President John Brooks said he hoped the day’s events would leave a legacy for everyone involved, particularly those younger.

“Hopefully some of the kids will remember this for some time,” he said.

“And hopefully they’ll be inspired by the stories of the feats of some of the generations past and present who have defended our wonderful country.”

The Panthers are a club on the rise, with a 15% increase in its junior base and with aspirations of having Under 20 and Division Two teams in the near future.
