The Queensland Outback team travelled to Thursday Island to play Northern United on Saturday, July 19.

The day started off at 9.30am with local junior games and a ladies match, followed by a local A grade game.

At 4pm, local fans turned out in force to watch Northern United play the Queensland Outback representative team.

Northern had a score to settle with Outback having won two of their past encounters.

The game lived up to the much anticipated hype, with Northern putting Outback on the back foot straight away with their skilled play and great attacking style to post first points.

Outback hit back through a Cameron Jackson try and Steven Brownhalls conversion.

Northern scored twice more along with a second try for Outback’s Trent Hoad as United went into half time with an 18-12 lead.

The second half of the game was pretty much like the first, only Outback were kicking into a very strong ocean breeze.

Further tries were scored by Marcus Cochrane, Daniel Flynn and Ashley Dyball with the conversions unsuccessful.

Both sides pushed hard and defended well with Northern beating Outback to the final bell with 30-24 scoreline.

The game was played in great spirit and this was evident with handshakes all round and a joint team photo after the match.

The presentation followed with Cameron Jackson (Outback) and Steve Singleton (Northern) collecting player of the match awards as voted on by the opposition.

Steve also had the pleasure of holding up the shield and trophy on behalf of the Northern team.

The Queensland Outback squad sincerely thank the QRL Central and Northern Divisions for making the game possible on Thursday Island.

We would also like to thank the leagues and local community at Thursday Island for making the team feel so welcome.

It truly was an amazing trip and thanks go to Scott Nosworthy, Dave Maiden, Rob Crow and Danny McGuire for all their assistance.

Well done to the squad and their team officials.
