Some important results emerged from round 16 of the Toowoomba Rugby League.

Wattles continued their winning run shutting out the Warwick Cowboys in the traditional southern derby.

The match was locked at 22 a piece late in the second half.  Warriors broke the dead lock with a converted try and late penalty goal for an eight point margin running out victors 30-22.

Valleys battled hard against a determined Dalby side, the steely defence of the Roosters being the difference, in the end running out 20-4 victors.

This result really opens up the final five make up with two rounds to go.  The Valleys Roosters sit sixth on the ladder on 16 points with Warwick and Dalby tied on 17 points holding down fourth and fifth positions.

The Roosters play Oakey and Brothers in the final two rounds and all being equal should be able to defeat two sides below them on the ladder.

The equation for both Warwick and Dalby is a bit more daunting.  The two sides clash this weekend and if an outright result to either side eventuates and Valleys win, then the Roosters will climb into the top five for the first time since round 1 of the competition.

Dalby will be hell-bent on victory considering they clash with competition front runners Wattles in the final round of the competition, albeit they are the only side to defeat the minor premiers in the normal fixtures for season 2014.

This exciting climax to the season replicates season 2013 where Highfields and Valleys had a mid-week play off to decide the final position.  Valleys went onto make the grand final but unfortunately the proposition of week to week sudden death football took its toll on the Roosters as they ran out of steam in the final against a determined Gatton Hawks.

Tips for the penultimate round are Souths to redeem their first round hiccup and put Highfields to the sword: The Valleys Roosters to continue their run and beat a gallant Oakey Bears in a crucial clash; the Gatton Hawks to seal third spot on the ladder and steamroll the Brethren; Pittsworth Danes to cause a major upset and upstage the Wattles Warriors at Pittsworth.

The last game of the round is the most intriguing and both sides have everything to play for.  I think the Dalby Diehards at home will rise to the occasion and just pip the courageous Cowboys.
