Expanding the Central Highlands Women’s competition to four or five teams may seem ambitious for the fledgling competition, but the determination of the 30 players who braved the extreme heat in the recent CH coaching clinic suggests it is highly likely to eventuate.

The purpose of the clinic was to refine players’ skills with a back to basics course but also to seek any new interested players for the 2015 season.

The clinic was organised and developed by former Queensland origin star Alan McIndoe who was supported by NRL Game Development officers Dom Draper and Rod Dahl.

Terri Weatherley (CH assistant coach), Grace Jones (CW Fillies coach), Kerri and Chris Catling (Middlemount coaches), RJ Stewart (CH Men’s assistant coach) and James Verzelette (Emerald Cowboys president & coach) were also there to lend a hand.

Following the clinic, the final CH representative squad was named.

CLERMONT BEARS: Carly Bell, Codie Patterson, Amber Fidler, Donna Kilpatrick, Sarah Hicks, Selena Hickmott, Ainslee Lawrence, Rheenie Devine, Elle Stitt, Sarah Nunan

EMERALD TIGERS: Amy O'Loughlin, Cooper Hill, Emma Holzwart, Cloe Ramsay, Maria Rawiri, Bonnie Walsh, Jess Bell, Caity Lye, Chantelle Nagel, Casey Watkins, Renee Hogan, Kelsie Parter

MIDDLEMOUNT PANTHERS: April Catling, Leatitia Perkins, Cher Bickey, Cassidy Morrissey

Central Highlands team manager, Cameron Stallard, said there is interest in both Blackwater and the Emerald Cowboys to enter teams, and the call for players to form a team from Dysart has also gone out.  2014 saw teams from Clermont, Emerald Tigers and Middlemount compete, with the Emerald Tigers team winning the inaugural premiership trophy.

Stallard believes that games like the North CH v South CH, and the representative games, gives the ladies a goal.

“Hopefully too it leads to more referees and more women who want to be involved with rugby league,” he said.

“Ultimately, it would be great to have an Under 15 or Under 16 junior competition to link with the seniors.”

First things first, however.

“We hope to have a game up in Mackay on December 6 to really kick start our representative campaign and our ultimate goal is to represent Central Highlands at the 47th Battalion in 2015.”
