RUGBY league officials were encouraged by the response to a five-week Female Rugby League Summer Competition held at Jones Park in Cairns last Wednesday night.
More than 60 women and girls attended the first session – highlighting the level of interest in the game in the north of the state.
The concept of a summer competition has been devised as a result of interest expressed from female players participating in school competitions who were looking for a regular opportunity to play rugby league.
The five-week program is headed up by NRL Development Officers Robbie Moore and Alby Anderson, with support from the QRL and local club staff.
Australian Jillaroos Heather Ballinger and Jenni-Sue Hoepper were on hand to lend support and inspire players aiming to play at the highest level, with well- defined pathways for female rugby league players in place.
There is still time to sign up and take part in the remaining few weeks of the competition. Girls of all skills levels from the age of 12 and older and women are welcome to join the skills and competition program.
The program runs from 6pm each Wednesday evening at Jones Park and will continue until December 10.
Entry price is $5 with children under 12 years free of charge.
