The Burleigh Bears have made it two wins from two home appearances by defeating defending champions the Northern Pride 18-10.

In what was another hard fought contest the Bears managed to get the better of the premiers who have now slumped to their third straight loss.

Similar to last week’s 28-12 win over Sunshine Coast, defence and ball control in the middle were the key for the Bears which pleased coach Jim Lenihan in his 100th match at the helm of the club.

“Overall I thought we went well. We had to play well too because especially in that first half it was very close,” he said.

“I thought our defence on our line put them under a lot of pressure. They had a lot of ball on our line in that second half but they were coming up with a lot of forced errors thanks to our defence.

“They had a lot of opportunities to win that game too, but the boys didn’t let them do it.”

Scoring opened in the 20th minute when Cameron King split open the Burleigh defence and linked up with Luke George.

Todd Seymour was making his first Intrust Super Cup appearance with the Bears since 2013 and it was his boot that led to the next two tries.

A mid-field kick hit the upright and ricocheted to chasing fullback Tyler Chadburn for the Bears’ opener in the 27th minute, while a cross-field bomb in the 37th minute found its way into the hands of Ryley Jacks.

Jacks' try gave Burleigh a 12-6 lead at the halftime break. Ten minutes into the second stanza the Bears extended the lead to two converted tries.

This time it was big interchange prop Mitch Sharp who stormed over from close range.

The Northern Pride managed to hold plenty of possession and field position during the final exchanges, but poor handling hurt them and they were unable to chase the Bears down.

A consolation try to Semi Tadulala in the 78th minute brought the final score to 18-10.

Bears back-rower Jason Chan was named man-of-the-match for a tireless 80 minute performance.

Lenihan praised Chan’s work ethic along with five-eighth Seymour’s kicking game.

“His ability to play 80 minutes is a really important thing for our team,” Lenihan said of Chan.

“It takes pressure off other guys in the pack and he was really good for us once again today.

“Todd Seymour’s long kicking game was great as well. He knew exactly when we needed it, too. Whenever we needed that long kick to take pressure off or put pressure on them, he provided it.”

Next week the Bears travel to Redcliffe while the Pride will head to Ipswich in search of their first win of the year.

Earlier in the day the Bears Colts picked up another big win, this time 42-10 over Tweed Heads Seagulls.

BURLEIGH BEARS 18 (Tyler Chadburn, Ryley Jacks, Mitch Sharp tries; Tyler Chadburn 3 goals) def NORTHERN PRIDE 10 (Luke George, Semi Tadulala tries; Cameron King goal) at Pizzey Park.
