For the second week running Souths Logan Magpies have tightened the screws on their opposition.

After holding Sunshine Coast to just one try last week, the Magpies backed it up with an equally comprehensive 42-4 victory over Norths Devils yesterday.

“Desperation I think is the word that sums it up and I think we’ve been that the past few weeks,” coach Josh Hannay said.

He added it was important for the club to back up the win against the Falcons with another strong performance.

“We spoke a lot about trying to build momentum and not take a step backwards,” he said.

“The guys were patient and executed pretty well.”

The Magpies raced to a 12-0 lead after 10 minutes with fullback Josh Damen and nippy winger Samisoni Vaioleti scoring.

However, the Devils hit back when Rogan Dean muscled over, but it was largely one way traffic – former Canberra Raider Travis Waddell took a Leon Panapa offload to give the home side a 24-4 lead at halftime.

They went on with the job, scoring three unanswered tries in the second half.

The pick was a pinpoint cross-field chip from halfback Ash Taylor for a flying Matt Trnka on the wing.

The four-pronged attack of Taylor, five-eighth Jack Joass, hooker Herschel Gideon and a roving Waddell proved difficult to contain.

“Last week he (Waddell) played the whole game at hooker and this match shifted between lock as well – he gives us that versatility,” Hannay said.

While the Magpies form is undoubtedly on the rise, their two wins have come against sides now below them on the ladder.

The task gets tougher against second-placed Ipswich Jets this Saturday.

“A lot of team structures are quite similar, but Ipswich are a bit different … it’s a big week for myself and the coaching staff to make sure that we’re going to Cherbourg well prepared, ”Hannay said.

“Defensively you have to be really disciplined and not drop off.”

Meanwhile, Norths return home to Bishop Park next Sunday to take on Easts Tigers as part of XXXX Rivalry Round.
