The rugby league family has stood as one in recent times to show incredible support for those in need.

When times are tough the game has the ability to unite communities.

The call to arms will go out again this weekend as the Central Division of the Queensland Rugby League host a round of fixtures that will acknowledge and support communities in the Central West region that continue to fight the battle against a crippling drought.

All venues hosting fixtures this weekend are encouraged to show their support by raising money and awareness for drought affected areas.  All monies raised will be donated to the Central West Rugby League which includes an area extending from Blackall to Longreach and Winton.

“The threat to these communities is very real and while Mother Nature may be their only salvation it is still important that affected communities know the rest of the state understand the situation they are in,”  Central Division Manager Glenn Ottaway said.

“I recently toured the area and while I was well aware of the drought it was inspiring to see how resilient the people in these communities are.  The Ilfracombe field has been unplayable for some time and it is now at a point where it does not even resemble a sporting field.”

The initiative is supported the by the Men of League.  This weekend marks their annual ‘Heritage Round’ partnership with the NRL but their commitment to a program in Outback Queensland highlights their reach within the rugby league community.

The Albert Park Motor Inn (Longreach) has also thrown their support behind the event.  Motel Managers Tony and Jane Wilkinson have donated four nights for two people in the outback.

Inclusive of flights this package is worth well over $2000 and will be donated to the league/venue that shows the greatest initiative in promoting an event and raising awareness of the drought.  (click here to view flyer)
