Gaters' grip on a finals berth is now a little tighter following a comprehensive 40-10 upset over Logan Brothers on Saturday.

The Sandgate-based side were stout in defence and while both teams were missing a host of troops, Gaters were able to readjust better.

They set up a 22-6 lead at the break and went on with the job in the second half, with Keiran English snaring a double.

Coach Craig Rodgers said the win was a watershed moment for his side who are now fifth on the Brisbane Rugby League ladder with four regular-season rounds to play.

“As far as attitude goes, it’s setting us up for the finals. But our goal is just to make it, we’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” he said after the match.

“It shows you what the club’s about, we’ve got depth there.

“We went into the game knowing that we’d have to defend, Logan Brothers are well coached and we had to get numbers in the tackles and I thought we were good at that.”

Gaters were missing up to nine regulars including Adam Marr and late withdrawal Manu Pipitolu, and played the match with just sixteen players with halfback Bobbie Goulding not getting on the field due to neck stiffness.

It forced Rodgers to juggle a number of players out of position.

Centre Kieran Turner lined up in the halves.

Another standout was former Easts Tiger Stephen Tunnicliffe, who scored a try and set up winger Aaron Corbyn with a long-range bust.

Logan Brothers started the second half with enthusiasm but couldn’t crack the Gaters goal-line defence.

In other fixtures, a late try and field goal to halfback Robbie Lane helped West Brisbane Panthers get past Easts 21-14.

The seventh-place Panthers are now three points shy of the Tigers in sixth.

Wynnum Manly Redland City kept their grip on first place with a 44-16 victory over Carina,

Normanby Hounds turned on the points, scoring eight second half tries to defeat Valleys 54-14, with Anthony Seeto getting a hat-trick.
