Seahawks surge in Round 15

Tugun came roaring back into form with a 34-6 win over the Runaway Bay Seagulls on Saturday evening at Bycroft Oval.

Coming into round 15 the Seahawks had won just one from their previous four games and their most recent appearance was a 50-10 loss to Burleigh.

The Seahawks bounced back with a resounding win over a Runaway Bay side who have been steadily rising up the competition ladder in recent months.

The Bay have developed into one of the more dangerous teams in the Coast-2-Coast Earthmoving Cup, but the Seahawks win is a reminder of why they should be considered one of the competition favourites.

Winger Joel Sykes led the way with three tries while Drumayne Dayberg-Muir, Tu Whakatihi and Tim Matenga all got across the line as well.

The Tweed Seagulls continued their resurgence and wrapped up a top-three finish with a dominant 54-10 win over Southport at Piggabeen on Sunday.

Tweed have now won three of their last four games and with Sunday’s win have guaranteed a top three finish with just two rounds remaining.

Finishing in the top three gives them a potential second chance during the final series, but if they can keep the push going a top two finish is still within their reach.

Halfback Michael Burgess continued his rich vein of form with three tries while Shawn Anderson also crossed for a hat-trick in the 10 tries to two rout.

Next week the Seagulls take on Burleigh in what will be a great test a fortnight out from the semis.

Burleigh Bears made it ten-straight with a 56-10 thumping of Currumbin at Pizzey Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears are runaway leaders of the Coast-2-Coast Earthmoving Cup and haven’t dropped a game since April 26.

That’s 98 days without defeat and they certainly don’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

Fullback Khan Ahwang posted 24-points on his own thanks to two tries and eight conversions.

Corbin Kiernan scored a hat-trick, Jacob Grant scored a double while Scott Purvis, Damian Ford and Harry Hughes all contributed to the try-scorer’s list as well.

The Bears lead the competition by seven points and are guaranteed to finish as Coast-2-Coast Earthmoving Cup minor premiers with two rounds left to play.
