The Yeppoon Seagulls made it back to back titles with a thrilling win over the Norths Chargers in Saturday’s Rockhampton Rugby League A-Grade Grand Final.
The Norths Chargers started the game as favorites after a convincing win over the minor premiers in the semi-finals but were on the back foot right from the kick off. A clinical Seagulls outfit jumped out to a 12-0 lead after just 10 minutes.
The Seagulls defence stood strong for most of the half and held off set after set on their own line. In the 31st minute they finally cracked after a determined run saw Norths post their first points of the game, boosting their confidence heading into the half time break 18-6 down.
The Seagulls started the second half just as they did the first posting early points. They looked to have the game sown up but the Chargers refused to lie down.
Off the back of some strong forward runs they posted back to back tries and some individual brilliance in the 66th minute saw the game tied up at 24 a piece.
The Seagulls did not panic and stuck to their game plan. Man of the match David Still posted his second try to take the lead late in the game. Yeppoon then sealed the deal with a try right on the full time siren to hand them back to back titles.
In the Reserve Grade Grand Final the crowd was keep on the edge of the seat with the Norths Chargers kicking a field goal in the second period of extra time to claim the premiership over Rockhampton Brothers.
In the Under 20’s the Emu Park Emu’s ran out winners 24–16 over Rockhampton Brothers in their first year of the competition. The Emu Park club was granted acceptance into the Rockhampton Rugby League early in the 2015 season and to come away with the Under 20 Premiership was a great achievement for the club.
