Coming off two byes and a big 50-22 win over the Ipswich Jets in Round 22, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls are hoping to put their stop-start past few weeks behind them and build up some winning momentum with the finals just around the corner.

Wynnum Manly FOGS Colts Challenge coach Leon Cherry said his side were hoping to finish their regular season on a positive note when they hosted the Sunshine Coast Falcons at Kitchener Park this Saturday.

“These byes have definitely come at the right time for us to get over some injuries and make sure we are at full strength for the last round,” Cherry said.

The Seagulls currently sit in third spot on the ladder, but will face a Falcons side who are desperate to push their way into the top five.

They currently sit in sixth spot on 24 points, with the Souths Logan Magpies on 25 points just above them on the ladder.

“This is it for them,” Cherry said of the Falcons. “They will be hoping to get a win this weekend and also for the Magpies or Devils to lose to make sure they get into the finals,” he said.

“They are going to be giving it their all on Saturday and are going to be a much different side to that we played in our two encounters with them.

“This weekend is going to be like a finals-type game and we just have to be ready.”

For this game, Cherry has made sure his side’s focus in training has been on matching the standards set by the competition leaders Burleigh and preparing as if they were going to take on the clear competition standouts this season.

“Burleigh are the yard stick and all the preparation we have done has been around beating them,” he said.

“If we are lucky enough to play them in the finals we have to be the best team this time around and make sure our defence and execution is tight.”

The other Round 25 matches will see the Ipswich Jets host the Souths Logan Magpies and the Toowoomba Clydesdales taking on the Burleigh Bears.

Sunday will continue with the Easts Tigers at home to the Redcliffe Dolphins and the Norths Devils hosting the Tweed Heads Seagulls to bring the round and playing season to an end.
