Match Report: PNG Hunters v Burleigh Bears

By QRL Media

The PNG Hunters finished their regular season on a high by posting a 44-24 win over the Burleigh Bears on Sunday.

Their try of the match came thanks to Esau Siune who pouched a ball that rebounded off the uprights to put the ball down for a lucky try.

Luck had nothing to do with their second however, with skipper Israel Eliab adding to his impressive try scoring tally this season soon after, beating two tacklers on his run to try line.

Rangy fullback Stargroth Amean was the next Hunter to score, reaching out his long arms near the right-hand touchline to give the home side their third four-pointer in a row.

However, the Bears hit back when some good lead-up work from halfback Ryley Jacks was rewarded with a try to Hayden Schwass.

The visitors were in again soon after thanks to late replacement on the wing Waka Wanahi to reduce the margin to six points.

But it was the Hunters who would have the final say of the half, with Adex Wera going over in the right-hand corner after a Thompson Teteh skilfully caught the ball behind him and passed to his winger for a 20-12 lead at halftime.

The Hunters continued their point-scoring flow in the second half, with firstly Zeming, Amean with his second from a brilliant bust and run and Teteh running through a gaping hole to hold a 38-12 lead.

The Bears though fought hard and were rewarded with two more tries; with Schwass picking up his second of the afternoon and his twin brother Daniel also getting on the board.

But it was the Hunters who had the final say of the afternoon, with skipper Eliab reaching out for one more try – his 22nd of the regular season.
