This final series was always going to reveal how much the Jets had evolved as a team.
At full time yesterday in the elimination final between the Jets and Tigers it was exactly one day short of a year since the Jets were bundled out by the Wynnum Seagulls in the exact same game in 2014.
Last year Matt Parcell scored in the 60th minute to take the Jets lead to 22-12 with 19 to go. The Jets got run down and lost 34-22.
Yesterday at the North Ipswich Reserve, Parcell scored an Intrust Super Cup finals-record five times and the Jets didn’t let the Tigers back into the game at all, not for a second.
Parcell showed speed, awareness, game sense and support play; his first try was on the back of a Kurt Capewell run from right to left then Capewell used his big left foot step to go straight through the defence. Looming up on the inside was Parcell with great support play.
The Jets had started the game with the first try and led 6-0.
All week the Jets had spoken of the dangers of Tom Butterfield. He scored the Tigers first try when he found a way over despite plenty of defence and grounded the ball under the sticks after an off-load against a retreating defence.
It was 6-6 after 14 minutes.
The Jets went the short kick off and it didn’t pay this time when big Felise Kaufusi found the crumbs and rampaged down field to find Brandon Downey who scored for the Tigers to lead 12-6 after 17 minutes.
This was the tipping point for the Jets; in a final, behind by six and 10 minutes to the break.
Dane Phillips took control of the situation and placed a neat grubber behind the line for Parcell to score, grounding the ball at speed scoring his second try. It was now 12 all.
Down the left hand side Marmin Barba spotted a gap and took off at speed, he centre kicked which hit the posts. That man Parcell scooped it up at speed and scored for his third try and the Jets now led 18-12 after 31 minutes.
Parcell’s first three tries showed his support play and ability to read and position him to back up his team mates.
His fourth showed what a smart player he is; one marker, everyone expects you to go open- go blind and get over the line for four tries before half time.
The Jets were in front 24-12 at the half time break after enjoying 61% of the ball and missing only six tackles in the first 40 minutes.
The Tigers scored the first try of the second half when Felise Kaufusi reached out with momentum and scored for the Tigers to be back to 24-18 after 13 minutes of the second half.
Parcell snuck under the posts after a smart one on one strip; running 50m to equal a Jets’ club record set in 2008 of five tries in a game.
It was now 30-18 after 55 minutes.
Carlin Anderson scored 26 points last week and 16 this week when he got over the line to take the Jets to 36-18.
The Jets were against the right hand side line but with three passes they found Anderson on the left who stepped back inside off his left foot and scored the try.
Kurtis Lingwoodock crashed and bashed his way over for try number one this year and number 10 for the Jets in his 92nd game for the club.
Nemani Valekapa scored to ice the win after great work from Sam Martin doing his best Gene Miles one handed over head pass to take the Jets to 44-18 winners and into their first preliminary final since 2008.
