A pod of determined Dolphins kept the Jets grounded in the first half to deliver a huge blow to the confidence of the defending premiers this season.

The last time Ipswich were held to nil in a half was against Wynnum Manly last year at BMD Kougari in Round 19; but that time it was only 8-0 and the Jets were able to come back to win.

The last time the Jets had 30 points scored against them in a half was when they played Burleigh in 2014 where they found themselves behind 32-0 – which happened again yesterday at South Pine Sports Complex against the rampaging Redcliffe Dolphins.

Ipswich had to contend with the withdrawal of leading try scorer this season Marmin Barba with Michael Purcell coming into the side on the left wing; while the changes for the Dolphins saw Shane Pumipi in for Hayden Hansen.

The Dolphins attacked the Jets from the outset with Harley Aiono getting the game started for the ‘home’ side in the fifth minute when they launched an offensive from deep in their own territory exposing some poor Jets’ defence.

It would soon turn into a procession of Dolphins; with Darren Nicholls next running it on the last and having the Dolphins screeching at 12-0.

Redcliffe struck again in the 29th minute when quick hands saw Daniel Bridge cross near the posts; and what was a hot day before became hotter for the Jets who trailed 18-0 after 29 minutes.

Jonus Pearson scored three minutes later in the left corner and the Dolphins had the ball on the end of their nose doing all the tricks at 24-0.

Bridge then crossed for his second try, again next to the posts and with the extras the Dolphins were up 30-0 after 35 minutes. Nicholls had the perfect half with the boot, slotting five from five.

Nicholls wasn’t satisfied with that and slotted the two points from the penalty to give his side a 32-0 half time lead.

The Jets message at half time was to tackle themselves back into the game and score first. Instead in a forgettable day for the visitors; they kicked out on the full which enabled the Dolphins to go deep into the Jets’ territory and score after three minutes for a 38-0 lead with 37 minutes left on the clock.

Satisfied with their work, there was then a lull in scoring until the Jets were able to end their drought stretching from the 47th minute against the Pride last week until the 71st minute yesterday to score a try.

Having gone 104 minutes of football without a four-pointer, they then managed to post two in succession, with Rory Humphreys over to score his second competition try, before forward Nat Neale got his seventh Intrust Super Cup try for the team to round out the scoring for the day.

The Jets had won the second half 12-6 and kept the Dolphins to one try in the second half to restore some pride in their performance; but otherwise it was the day of the Dolphin.

The Jets will regroup to play Wynnum Manly at home next week while the Dolphins travel to Mackay to play the Cutters.
