The Redcliffe Dolphins Mal Meninga Cup side is edging closer to a spot in the finals after their win against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls last Saturday at Deception Bay.

The match saw the Dolphins score five tries overall, with halfback Harrison Smith slotting two successful kicks for the team before the game was up.

Down 12-4 at half time, Redcliffe made an impressive comeback after addressing some edge defence issues and finished up with a 24-16 victory.

Coach Nathan Meischke noted that one player in particular stood out to him in the second half – lock Jayden Bishop.

“He took it upon himself to ensure that there was better communication used out on the field, which was just outstanding,” he said.

“He received admirable support from all players on the team and that’s what ultimately lead us to the win.”

Meischke named second-rower Rendon Pelite as his Man of the Match for his remarkable ball skills, with props Liam Cresswell and Bailey Butler receiving honorable mentions for their efforts this season.

“Liam is really finding his straps now and is just coming along so well. Bailey is also someone that has been shining consistently this season,” he said.

The weekend win saw the Dolphins climb the ladder within Pool C and they are currently sitting in third with one match to go before the quarter finals.

Set to face the Norths Devils this weekend in Narangba, Meischke said he was feeling confident about his team’s potential to achieve another victory.

“We’ve learnt from our losses this season and we’ve taken a lot from those matches,” he said.

“If we get some good kicks and chases in there, and take the opportunities presented to us on the day, we’ll be great.”

Although they’ve got a points differential to cover, victory could see the Dolphins sneak into second place ahead of current placeholders Victoria, allowing them to play in the quarter finals on the April 23.

When asked about improvements he’d like to see in his team for this final regular season match, Meischke said his team were focusing heavily on building momentum and pressure on the opposition, and learning to play with patience.

“We have to earn the right to play the way we want to play,” he said.
