Take a look at the match reviews from across Round 6 in the Toowoomba Rugby League competition.

Souths 23 def Gatton 22
Souths remained undefeated on Saturday night when they travelled to Gatton to take on the Hawks in front of a huge local crowd. In an absolute cliff hanger. The Tigers won courtesy of a Luke Nolan field goal with five minutes remaining.

The Hawks started the game well when Callum Woolacott swooped on a lose Souths ball to sprint away to score under the posts. Then, in-form fullback Corey Blades showed his speed to firstly, set up centre Josh Ryan to score out wide, then Blades ran 70m to get the competition leaders 12-6 in the blink of an eye.

Fullback Tye Gray got the Hawks within two points 12-10 after Gatton replied with some good team work.  The game settled down coming up to the break and as we have seen in many games, either side of the half is crucial and Souths second rower Lachlan Telford grabbed a four pointer right on the half time bell. Luke Nolan missed the relative easy attempt and the Tigers went to the sheds with a 16-10 half time lead.

Souths maintained their momentum when Josh Gordon scored for the Tigers to grab lead 22-10. Enter form forward Francis Han who barged over beside the posts to get the Hawks with a converted try. Then Gatton Hooker Daniel Marsh weved his magic to put centre Cameron Nicholls in out wide untouched. Woolacott had the conversion from the sideline. The touchies were undecided, but the ref gave the extra two points to level the scores 22-22 with 20 minutes remaining.

The game saw both sides not complete their sets and the last 20 mins was no different. Gatton had most of the ball in the last stanza, but Souths probably used it more effectively at the right time and that was at the 75th minutes when Luke Nolan potted a field goal from 35 metres out.

Gatton tried hard to snatch the game in the closing stages but to no avail. Souths best were captain coach Daniel Holmes, Luke Nolan and Corey Blades whilst Daniel Marsh, Robbie Fletcher and Alex Ambia performed well for the Hawks.

Pittsworth, courtesy of Mitchell Carpenter and Daniel York finished the better scoring four unanswered tries to take the game 42-28.

The game was fairly scrappy with both sides missing opportunities. Jason Wilmott and Brendan Wilson tried hard for Wattles, in the end, they could not outlast the Danes who cemented their position at the top of the ladder. Pittsworth Lock Daniel York was instrumental in the victory with Captain Matthew Briggs bagging two tries in a tireless effort. York also grabbed a double as did five eight Thomas O’Sullivan.

Warwick 24 def Highfields 22
The Warwick Cowboys snatched a vital win to stay level on top of the table with Pittsworth and Souths. Warwick Cowboys needed to show the competition they were “the real thing” in the TRL competition. They did not disappoint in an amazing display.

Both teams played very well and a draw was probably then more deserving result. Certainly the visitors came to play and scored four tries to three in the first half with only one being converted whilst Highfields scored three converted tries to level the scores at 18 all at the break.

Halves for both teams kept turning the opposition around. The Lee brothers for the Eagles and Cantwell and McIvor for the Cowboys probably stamped each other out in the closest of matches this season.

It took ages to break the deadlock until Highfields halfback Jarrod Lee running onto a pass from Jake Cooley to make the score 22-18 with approximately 15 minutes remaining.

The wrestle in the ruck seemed to be the most important contest in the game and Warwick were given an opportunity when Highfields kicked out on the full with 2 minutes remaining to give the Cowboys a sniff.

They did not disappoint when Joe Fuimaono went wide to link up with his outside backs to let winger Brodie Quirk make crucial yards. The Cowboys settled the next two tackles then swung it wide to let Quirk continue his good lead up work to score in the corner to level the scores 22-22 right on full time.

Morgan Taylor had the kick to snatch victory from the sideline. It looked an ugly kick, but it was enough for the Warwick Cowboys to secure the win and remain on top of the TRL ladder.
