The one that got away.

Those five words are all you’d need to sum up the mood In the Carina camp following their 46-32 loss to an under strength Gaters at Leo Williams Oval on Saturday.

In a match that ebbed and flowed it looked as if Carina were going to finish over the top of their opposition that had the lead for the majority of the match.

Trailing 32-18 in the 60th minute, Carina scored three tries in ten minutes to reduce the margin to just two points.

Seemingly only needing to get the ball in the opposition red zone to score again, untimely errors undid their chances.

Three dropped balls in three sets handed momentum back to Gaters, who capitalised on the field position.

Playmaker Marlon Doak stepped through the line for his hat-trick before Jarrod Watson sealed it for Gaters with a try of his own.

Carina coach Peter Edwards said a poor start where his side conceded 16 points through two long-range intercepts was to blame.

“We need to be prepared to do the hard work ... every guy played well, but we need to play better as a team,” he said.

Gaters lead 22-8 at the break, before Carina launched their first of their comebacks to bring the score back to 22-18.

“The message at halftime was just to run hard, play fast and that’s what got us back in the game,” Edwards said.

“But we seem to rolling through teams and then all of sudden we go away from that.”

While Carina was left to rue missed opportunities, the depth of an undermanned Gaters side missing around ten regulars was again on show.

The side has four wins from their opening five matches ahead of a tantalising match-up against defending premiers Ipswich.

In the second match at Leo Williams Oval, Normanby got their second win of the year with a 38-22 result over Easts Tigers.

One standout was powerhouse forward Tikiko Noke who sparked and scored a 50m try.

The prop palmed off several Tigers defenders, opening space for his outside men who got the ball back to Noke in support.
