A first half hat-trick from winger David Sheridan has seen the Tweed Heads Seagulls post a win against a fast-finishing Sunshine Coast Falcons in their Round 10 match yesterday.
Sheridan got on the board early in the match played a Piggabeen which the Seagulls won 22-16; and how now scored at least one try in his past three outings for the Seagulls.
The Sunshine Coast finished strongly in the match, but it was not enough, as they had given the Gulls too much of a head-start at their home ground, with Tweed Heads taking a 16-4 lead into the halftime break.
The home side were the first to score in the second half as well, with Sam Irwin crossing in the 55th minute for their last try of the afternoon.
Trailing 22-4 late in the half, the Falcons piled on three tries in 12 minutes at the end with Rowan Klein bagging a double.
New Storm recruit Ryan Morgan stepped out for his first hit out since joining Melbourne and showed enough signs from limited chances in the match.
“Ryan was solid even though he didn’t get a lot of good ball,” Falcons coach Craig Ingebrigtsen said.
“He will be better for that experience… he saved a try on our try line, hit the ball hard but didn’t get a lot of opportunities.”
Joe Stimson and Thunderbolts product Jake Turpin also put in good performances in the losing side.
The late surge at the end resulted in a change of tactics by the visitors.
“We changed structurally a little bit with the way we played,” Ingebrigtsen said.
“We got into a little bit of a rhythm and were certainly coming over the top of them but we just ran out of time.”
Next weekend, the seventh-placed Falcons will be at home on Sunday to take on Souths Logan Magpies; while Tweed Heads will host their Seagulls counterparts Wynnum Manly, also on Sunday.
