Queensland Women’s Representative and Jillaroo Brittany Breayley was a special guest at Brisbane’s St Margaret’s Anglican Girls School where she spoke to the students about her pathway to the top of the game.
The Ascot school is participating in the PlayNRL Sporting Schools program, which is a five-week program that introduces Grade 3 and Grade 4 girls to rugby league through variety of modified skills and games.
St Margaret’s is one of select number of schools that participated in a trial program called the NRL Touch Transition Program, which is aimed at familiarising girls who have a background in touch football to the skill of rugby league such as tackling for example.
It is one of many programs that the NRL utilise to recruit female primary school students to the game and Breayley’s visit on Wednesday, May 18, has no doubt encouraged more girls to take up the game.
Her presentation came a week after she represented the Australian Jillaroos in the Test match against the Kiwi Ferns, which was another fantastic display of women’s rugby league.
“I’m so humbled I was given the opportunity to visit St Margaret’s school as it is so great to see and be a part of the development of rugby league, especially with the female program,” Breayley said.
“It’s quite exciting to see the pathways nowadays for female players and it’s also exciting to see how enthusiastic they are about the game.
“The girls were full of questions but, most importantly, by the end of the session they all wanted to be a Jillaroo in the future!”
The talented rake was invited to speak at St Margaret’s by her boss at Marjack TPT Repairs whose daughter attends the school.
This year, NRL Development will continue to work closely with St Margaret’s to provide more opportunities, including the chance to transition students into an NRL Catholic and Independent League Tag Gala Day in 2016.
