Warwick 24 drew with Souths 24

The Hutchies match of the day produced a cliff-hanger when Warwick and Souths drew at Father Ranger oval 24 all. The scoreboard could not split the sides even at halftime when the score was 12 all.

Dylan Galloway scored a good individual try to unlock the scores just after halftime and then man-of-the-match Warwick fullback Craig Donn chased his own grubber to get the Cowboys to a 24-12 lead with 30 minutes remaining.

Warwick were their own worst enemy when they came up with some coach killers and probably had a chance to settle the match down. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the match never settled and was played at an amazing pace throughout.

Souths showed why they are undefeated when they scored under the posts after an Aaron Cherry break where he found Corey Blades backing up. Then, that man Aaron Hooper intercepted a Paul Cantwell pass to score his second 90m intercept in as many weeks to level the scores at 24-all with 20 minutes remaining.

In the closing stages the match was anyone’s. Luke Nolan attempted a field goal with 5 minutes left only to see it hit the crossbar. Each side had their chances but a draw was the best result is a very close game.

If there was a winner, it was Souths who secured a Madsen Rasmussen trophy berth. Their opponent is anyone’s guess.

Highfields 40 def Goondiwindi 0

Highfields were all smiles on Saturday night after a satisfying win over the Goondiwindi Boars. The Eagles led 18-nil at half time and went on with it in the second half to wrap up the match 40-nil. Eagles coach Gus McKellar was pleased with his side’s performance, especially in defence.

Eagles centre Sean Hamel returned after a few weeks on the sideline with a rib injury and was awarded man of the match.

Goondiwindi showed plenty of enthusiasm and the back row of Michael Offerdahl, Jack Laidlaw and Levi Wilson never gave up.

Pittsworth 42 def Brothers 12

Pittsworth returned to form with a convincing win over Brothers in a surprising result at Club Pittsworth on Saturday night.

Brothers have played well this season and would have fancied themselves but big games from the Danes’ Braydon Gibbs and Matthew Briggs secured the two premiership points.

The win may have come at a cost for the Danes with serious injuries to Thomas O’Sullivan (knee) and Luke Hellyer (thumb).

The scores were locked at 12-all at halftime. But Brother’s defence went missing and coach Liam Cullen agreed his team needed to work on that area. Whilst disappointed, he pointed out that Mitch Revell continued his great season.

Dalby 51 def Oakey 6

Dalby Diehards travelled to Oakey in the local derby. The match was played for the inaugural Jayde Laine Medallion, which Oakey’s Jesse Laine won. Dalby were clinical in their steamrolling of the Bears having control of the match throughout.

Wattles 26 def Valleys 22

Valleys travelled to Clifton in another “must-win” situation. Unfortunately for the Roosters they let a 14-4 halftime lead slip to be defeated by Wattles 26-22.

Wattles showed good character to come from behind to win. Wattles coach Garry Lawrence praised young frontrower Harry Fullwood and said Joseph Morris and Dale Perkins also played well. In a scrappy game, Wattles held the ball better than their opponents. Especially in the second half when the young Warriors lifted to control the match.

Valleys Roosters had their chances but poor ball control summed up their game. Josh Birch and Ryan Stevens tried hard in a losing side.
