Dolphins post important win over Blackhawks

by QRL Media

Redcliffe held on to post a stirring 18-16 win over the top-of-the-table Townsville Blackhawks at Dolphin Oval on Sunday.

While only a penalty goal off the boot of Darren Nicholls was the difference in the end – it was a great second-half comeback from the home side that secured them the win.

The visitors raced out to a 16-0 lead at halftime, with tries to Lona Kaifoto, Jahrome Hughes and Hezron Murgha all within the opening half-hour of the game.

However, from thereon, errors overtook their game and allowed the Phins to firstly crawl their way back into the contest and to eventually win it.

In a classic ‘game of two halves’ the home side turned the page in second, with Jack Ahearn crossing early to start the comeback.

Thomas Opacic and then centre Daniel Randall also crossed soon after to lock the scores, with the penalty goal from Nicholls in the 65th minute proving vital.

However, a last-ditch play from Blackhawks fullback Matt Bowen almost stole the game back for the Blackhawks, but his cross-field kick on the last tackle for centre Delouise Hoeter had just too much on it.

This week, the Blackhawks host the Jets, while the Dolphins will enjoy the weekend off with the bye.
