The Souths Logan Magpies headed down to Piggabeen Sports for their clash against the Tweed Heads Seagulls fresh from a bye and ready to face their fellow feathered rivals.
Having come into this game following their at the death loss Round 14 against the Hunters; the Magpies were hoping maintain their recent strong form and came out of the blocks with fierce intent.
The visitors raced out to an early lead with four tries in the opening 20 minutes and held a 28-6 lead over the Seagulls at halftime.
Magpies Coach Josh Hannay was more than impressed with his side and was happy they were able to close out the game to eventually win 48-30, despite a second half comeback from the hosts.
“We completed really well which allowed us to control field position and we were able to execute because of the good ball through our 90% completion rate,” Hannay said.
“Tweed are a good side and once they got continuity with possession they were hard to stop. We were lucky to get some possession towards the end and were able to finish with a win.”
Magpies half back Sam Scarlett and prop George Fai made sure their team secured victory both scoring two tries each.
“They were both outstanding and had an all-round great game,” Hannay said.
“George has been outstanding all season and has continued to be a handful for opposition teams.”
The Magpies side had two players on debut, centre Neil Muller and Francis Fifita, and Hannay was pleased they started their Cup careers with a winning feeling.
“It was great, happy for them to get the opportunity to play in the Intrust Super Cup,” Hannay said.
“Neil was outstanding in the centres. Francis did not get on until late and was not able to show what he could do. But it was good to have them in the team.”
Next Sunday, the Magpies will host the Townsville Blackhawks with kick off at 2pm. The last time these two sides came head to head was in Round 3 with the Magpies going down by 20 points.
The Magpies will be hoping to continue their good form and reverse that result; while the Seagulls are back at home and will host the PNG Hunters.
