THE Absolute Enterprises Mackay Cutters have continued their late push to get off the foot of the Intrust Super Cup ladder in defeating the Wynnum Manly Seagulls at Darryl Bourke Oval in Moranbah.

In a clinical performance, Mackay bested their opponents in front of a raucous crowd as the teams headed out west for QRL’s Country Round.

The Cutters went about proving their intent early when Josh Chudleigh found space in the Wynnum Manly defensive line, setting up Mackay’s first chance for points. From there it was simple drawing and passing out to Tautau Moga who sliced between winger and centre to score the first points.

Things got worse for the Seagulls a short time later when a simple error deep inside their half presented Mackay with another scoring opportunity. The Cutters wasted little time in seizing their chance, scoring from the scrum base as some neat cut-out passing found Jordan Periera out wide on the overlap to extend the lead to 10.

Bombs away

The Seagulls were hungry for a result on their next visit into the Cutters end of the field, and they took the aerial route to find their first points of the game as Liam Taylor spilled a swirling bomb kick in front of his own posts, and Michael Cronin swooped on the loose ball to dot down for Wynnum Manly.

Unfortunately for the Seagulls their hard work would come undone in the shadows of half-time as the Cutters gave them a taste of their own medicine. Grant Rovelli’s towering bomb was put down by the Seagulls and Periera pounced on the loose ball before throwing an easy pass for Taylor to scoot under the posts to give the Cutters a comfortable 16-6 half-time lead.

Second-half

Wynnum Manly came out firing for the second-half as they desperately looked to get back into the contest. Their first attempt at points was squandered by a perfectly timed Rovelli intercept, but they made the most of their second attempt when Daniel Odgen latched on to a pass from midfield, slipped through the Cutters defence and streaked away to score, closing the gap to a converted try.

Despite the gap rapidly closing, Mackay held their composure well, and their patience with the ball was soon rewarded as they found more points down Wynnum Manly’s right flank, Taylor holding up the ball beautifully for Leonati Feiloakitau-Fetuani to charge into space and score a crucial try.

Final nail

Mackay would put the final nail in Wynnum Manly’s coffin as the final few minutes elapsed, a neat short ball had Braden Uele dragging several defenders across the tryline with him to seal the 28 points to 10 victory to the cheers of the appreciative Moranbah locals.
