‘They did a good job of tearing the Tweed right-hand side defence apart

The Sunshine Coast Falcons have kept themselves in the hunt for a finals spot with a 28-16 win over Tweed Heads Seagulls at Gympie on Sunday.

It was Sunshine Coast's second straight win and moved them within a point of the now sixth-placed Souths Logan Magpies on the Intrust Super Cup ladder.

Storm had eight players step out for the Falcons with Richie Kennar starring with a first-half hat-trick inside the opening half hour of the game.

The winger was joined by his Melbourne team-mates in putting up strong performances on the day.

“It was great to see Richie bounce back to form, he looked like he was back to his best on the weekend,” Falcons coach Craig Ingebrigtsen said.

“It was good to see him and Morgs together on that left side. I thought they did a good job of tearing the Tweed right-hand side defence apart to be honest.

Mark Nicholls’ first stint was really good. He did a lot of defence, tidied up for us and did a lot of the little things right.

“He was really good on the weekend, I thought that was probably his best game for us so far this season.”

The stage is now set for a crucial match-up with the sixth-placed Magpies on Sunday at Davies Park.

While it was a loss for the Seagulls, they put in a great effort, with the injury-ravaged side pushing the Falcons all the way.

The Seagulls lost key contributors Ali Grant, Sam Meskell, Michael Burgess and Tevita Folau before kick-off and were forced into a backline reshuffle.

Despite this, the Seagulls put in a solid performance and managed to go into the final 20 minutes of the match trailing 14-10 after back-to-back tries by Cory Blair and Josh Coyle.

But the class of the Falcons outside backs was on display in the final stanza with the side putting on three late tries to run away with the victory.

With the loss the Seagulls find themselves in 11th position but will be hoping to turn things around when they take on the Wynnum Manly Seagulls next week.
