Preview of Round 15 of the Gold Coast - Tweed Gen Z Employment Cup.

Currumbin Eagles v Bilambil Jets

The match of the round will see the Currumbin Eagles take on the Bilambil Jets at Galleon Way. Only two points ahead on the ladder, the Jets will not be taking any chances this weekend against the strong Eagles. Extremely light-on with players, the Jets have been heavily reliant on their Under 19s playing up. Jack Rowles, Tom Plater and Darcy Early were standouts and all from the Under 19s squad. Coach Troy McClean knows the boys are putting in the effort and are striving to perform better each week. Battered and down after a 68-0 loss against the Tweed Heads Seagulls, Currumbin are determined to complete the season on high. Also heavily reliant on their Under 19s squad, the Eagles are also battling injury to players. This will be a battle between two young squads as both teams need a win to stay out of the wooden spoon position.

Burleigh Bears v Tugun Seahawks

The Burleigh Bears and Tugun Seahawks will come together to play for the Crackers Tangata-Toa Cup. Joe Tangata-Toa and Mark “Crackers” Goodwin are player legends from Burleigh and Tugun respectively. Although a couple players may be out due to injury, Tugun are slowly seeing some continuity in player combinations. Coach Martin Griese is pleased the players are grouping well and he is starting to see the football he originally desired for the team. Tu Whatahiti and Jerry Byers are players to watch for Burleigh this week. Griese said “we face Burleigh on the regular and know exactly what we are in for”. Burleigh will be eager to rectify their last 20-18 loss to the Tugun Seahawks. Coach Stuart Wilkins said “the boys played some of their best football in the first 10 minutes of the game and were even pleased with themselves”. The Bears worked on maintaining possession and starting strong, which seemed to pay off as they defeated the Southport Tigers 50-0. Josh Berkers, Rhys Duke and Jesse Malcolm will be ones to watch this week. Wilkins hopes the boys can be relaxed, as they undertake light training through the week.

Southport Tigers v Ormeau Shearers

It was a great win for the Ormeau Shearers as they defeat the Runaway Bay Seagulls 26-22 last weekend. Gaining momentum from their win against the Currumbin Eagles, the Shearers will see the return of a couple players from injury. Coach John Flint is impressed with how the boys composed themselves and the potential they are showing. Flint said “we can’t slack off this week as we want to end on a high note”. Jade Gage-Nepia and Mohi Kendrick will be key players for Southport this week. Rebuilding from last weekend’s loss against the Burleigh Bears, the Southport Tigers have a good attitude towards rectifying their loss, especially at home. A special mention to Lachlan Douglas who will debut in A Grade this weekend. Coach Michael Esdale said “we had a good training week and got some fresh perspective from Mark Ross who coaches the Under 19s”. The Tigers are striving to get back to basic football and to work on their defence. As Ormeau is unpredictable, Esdale hopes the boys can regain their confidence, shut down their plays and target their weaknesses.

Runaway Bay Seagulls v Tweed Head Seagulls

It was a surprise loss for the Runaway Bay Seagulls as they fell short 26-22 against the Ormeau Shearers.  Disappointed with the first half, Coach Clinton Toopi hopes the boys can work on their completion rates and bring a big game for their clash against Tweed. Toopi said “every week will count especially now leading in to the finals, we need to rise and play tough this week”. Gene Ropoama will be named captain for this week’s game and will be one to watch. Building strength for the final series, Tweed Heads are working on improving their defence. Coach Clint Barends is pleased with the team’s progress and performance over the weekend. He gave an honourable mention to both Jacob Garland and Tim Cassidy who scored hat-tricks over the weekend. Steve Gillett and Jeff Marcus also stood out in the match and will be ones for Runaway Bay to keep an eye on.

Good luck to all teams this weekend!
