Phins get one back on Jets
A converted try has again been the difference between the Redcliffe Dolphins and Ipswich Jets, but this time it was the Phins who two took claimed the points this time winning 30-24.
The Dolphins came out of the blocks strongly as Dolphins coach Daniel Green knew what the Jets could produce if his side didn’t get out to the best possible start.
“The Jets have an unconventional style of footy and I do not think they get the respect they should for their speed and pace,” Green said.
“They score a lot of points that other teams would not and it is because of their pace. I knew we had to be prepared and be ready defensively because they can score from anywhere.”
After a strong first half from the Dolphins, the score was 30-6, but the Jets were not going to go without a fight.
“We worked really together in the first half and really frustrated the Jets,” Green said. “We got the result with the team working together as one.”
The Jets put on 18 unanswered points in the second half to bring the scoreline to within a converted try, but it was the gutsy defence from the Dolphins which got them the win.
“We did not execute well in the second half and also had some injuries. But there are no excuses,” Green said.
“The Jets executed really well in the second half and their defence was brilliant.
“We knew that’s what they could produce and we showed them a lot of respect.”
Dolphins fullback Paul Byrnes scored a double to assist his side to victory and his coach was pleased with his performance.
“Paul is a good young kid, he has been out with an injury and this was his fourth game back,” Green said.
“He is a very quick player which is ideal for a fullback. Sometimes he is only as quick as he needs to be to score the try.”
The Dolphins half back Tyson Gamble was perfect with the boot and after a tough performance last weekend, Green was very impressed with how he was able to turn it around.
“I was most happy with Tyson’s performance today. We had a chat during the week about his performance last weekend and he responded really well,” Green said.
“He played with speed, skill and organisation. He has played a lot of first grade and he is a really good player, he has progressed really well.”
The Dolphins will travel to Panthers country for their last regular season match this weekend to take on West Brisbane Panthers at Kev McKell Oval on Saturday.
Green will not be changing too much with his side, but will not be taking this game lightly.
The Panthers are always a tough opponent and Green will be hoping his side can take home the points.
“The Panthers are a very tight group, very physical and blokes that want to play for each other are always going to be tough to beat. Hopefully we can get the two points this weekend,” Green said.
As Round 17 came to an end, Carina came out on top after a close on with the Valleys Diehards, winning 37-36 and the Panthers proved too strong for the Logan Brothers winning 44-16.
The Gaters were no match for the home side the Normanby Hounds winning 70-10 and the Wynnum Manly Redland City Seagulls were too strong on their home turf for the Easts Tigers winning 42-28.
