BENNETT URGES JUNIOR COACHES TO LOOK AT 'BIGGER PICTURE'

Leading NRL coach Wayne Bennett is the voice of a new initiative urging our junior rugby league coaches in Queensland to be at the forefront of the game’s concerted effort to ensure a positive experience for all participants.

An initiative of the QRL and NRL Game Development team in Queensland, the online component of the campaign – “It’s not JUST what you coach, it’s HOW you coach” – was launched today.

The powerful video, which features an overzealous coach on the sideline, will be played on the big screen at tonight’s match between the Brisbane Broncos and Canterbury Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium.

The campaign’s message will feature on Channel Nine’s live coverage of the Intrust Super Cup this Sunday, and will also be rolled out by the North Queensland Cowboys and Gold Coast Titans.

In the clip, Bennett’s seasoned words encourage our junior coaches to collectively take a step back and re-evaluate the things that really matter.

“Some junior coaches need to have a good look at themselves,” Bennett says.

“A negative coaching experience plays a major role in kids leaving the game.

“Things that are detrimental to kids’ playing experience, is player selection process, an over competitive environment and coaches who don’t communicate.

“It’s not all about the premiership, it’s not all about your ego. There’s no perfect way to coach, but we can all be better than what we are.”

Importantly, the campaign is much broader than a visual message.

QRL and NRL Game Development staff are restructuring coaching modules to include ‘how you coach’ material along with the traditional technical aspects, and consideration is also being given to the way in which the junior competitions are currently delivered.
