As the regular season came to an end this weekend, the boot of Ollie Olds kicked the West Brisbane Panthers to victory over the Redcliffe Dolphins 13-12.

Panthers coach Wayne Weeks was very pleased with his halfback Ollie Olds and happy that his preparation was paying off for him.

“Leading up to this game, we worked on Ollie’s game and he has been coming into his own. He seems very confident in himself,” Weekes said.

“With the finals coming up, this is exactly what you want from your halfback and its great he is finding this form in this part of the season,”

As the half time score was a close 8-6 the Dolphins way, Weekes was not worried and he believed in his team and their abilities.

“We were always in the game, we will always work hard and grind away until we get the win. This was exactly what we did in this game,” Weekes said.

“It was close at half time, but I knew if we just kept doing what we were doing we could get away with the three.”

“We have won a few games this year in the last 20 minutes because we do not panic. We work hard and stay calm.”

With a tight family culture at the Panthers, Weekes knows this is ideal for any footy team approaching finals and something that is enshrined in the clubs’ culture.

“We have a strong culture and environment with no concessions. This is conducive to creating a strong team and success comes off the back of that,” Weekes said.

“We call it the West family. It is the core factor of the club which usually rubs off overtime and as finals approach all the teams look for this and we already have it.”

The first week of the finals will kick off this weekend and the Panthers will be hosting their rivals the Gaters and they will be preparing for a tough game.

“We have a friendly rivalry with the Gaters. They came into the competition the same time as we did and they have made the finals since coming into the competition,” Weekes said.

“The Gaters had a strong finish last year and we will not be taking anything for granted.”

“The team knows they have to play for the full 80 minutes if they want to get the results.”

Last year’s grand finalists, the Wynnum Manly Seagulls have secured the minor premiership by one point with their win over the Normanby Hounds 34-12.

The Ipswich Jets proved too strong for the Valleys Diehards winning 36-22 and the Gaters secured fifth spot with a great win over the Logans Brothers 62-28.

The Easts Tigers defeated Carina on forfeit.
