When the finals roll around next weekend, the Ipswich Jets will not be featuring for the first time since 2010, while the Wynnum Seagulls haven’t missed September football since 2009.

Despite both teams missing out on finals football this year; yesterday both teams played for the Channel 9 cameras and put on an entertaining performance.

Played at Wynnum’s home ground, the Jets brought with them the attitude of playing Jets football.

It all started well for Ipswich with short-kicking maestro Dane Philips rolling one into the in-goal, hoping for a speedy back to pounce on it.

Instead, he got giant New Zealander Nat Neale following his captain to ground the ball and give the Jets the early 4-0 lead.

The Jets however were cursing when Seagulls big number 11 Mitchell Buckett crossed to draw scores level. Matt Seamark made no error with the conversion and the home side led 6-4 after 15 minutes.

At noted try-scorer, Jets winger Michael Purcell showed that he can stop them as well when he held up a rampaging Nicholas Harrold who seemed destined to score.

In bad news for the visitors, Neale left the field injured; but they were soon on the front foot again when Wes Conlon slotted a penalty kick to get scores back at level pegging 6-6.

In a hard-fought game, the Jets defence was turning away the Seagulls time after time. Liam Capewell completed a hug defensive play when he caught Daniel Ogden and wrestled him into touch to win the Jets the ball in great field position.

Jets co-coaches Ben and Shane Walker had mayhem on their mind when they instructed forward David Fa’alogo to head out in the centres. The team executed a two-pass shift and the big man – who was playing his last game – brought out his huge fend and scored to give the Jets a 12-6 lead with eight minutes to go until halftime.

After the break, crowd favourite Peter Gubb (who has played 116 games of quality for the Seagulls) showed once again why fans love him and with his Eric Grothe Snr hair; he got his team back to within two points two minutes after the break by making a determined run and scoring an important try.

However, the Jets counter-attacked when XXXX man of the Match Conlon went over for a great try in the 49th minute after the video referee was called on to confirm the on-side.

Ipswich rake Landon Hayes hadn’t scored a try all year and must have been nervous about finishing on zero for 2016. However, he soon made sure he got on the bard after making a sneaky dart from dummy half to go over the line in a great hooker’s try.

Gulls fullback Ogden then scored for Wynnum to reduce the deficient on the scoreboard to 24-16 after finding a gap where there didn’t appear to be one.

However, Richard Pandia ended the Jets season with a try on the hooter to give his side a 28-16 win.
