The Western League held their grand final at the Charleville Showgrounds, where the Charleville Comets and Augathella Meat Ants met to determine the 2016 premiers.
Throughout the season, the Augathella team were improving with each game and came into the decider with a good chance of claiming a win.
The two teams had previously met in the major semi, with the Comets running out winners on the day 44-42 to head straight to the big day.
There were high expectations for this return match and it did not disappoint with the solid defence throughout the game. As such, it took some brilliant play to score any points.
The quality of this game was of a high standard with both teams showing they wanted this premiership.
The Comets scored in the first couple of minutes of the game which led to the Meat Ants chasing them all game.
In the end, the Comets were not to be denied, with the Charleville team coming out the winners with a 28-10 result to take out the trophy.
This trophy was donated to the Western League in 1963 by local legend Charles Phillott.
During the 90s, the Western League folded for a couple of years and the trophy went missing.
However, it was handed in to local butcher Shaun Radnedge a number of years later by a resident who found it in the local dump.
It was given a clean-up and a bit of a remodel and the Western League again got up and running with this same trophy still being presented today.
