The Queensland Rugby League sends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of former Queensland Maroons and Brisbane Rugby League winger Terry Butler.

Butler, a Townsville Souths junior, passed away yesterday aged 58 after a battle with lung cancer.

Butler (pictured right) represented Queensland in the second game of the 1983 Origin series and will forever be recognised in elite company as FOG No. 39.

FOGS executive chairman Gene Miles described the former Brothers and Wynnum Manly flyer as a “complete footballer.”

“I played a lot of junior footy alongside Terry, and he was a tremendously talented footballer,” Miles said.

“He had that incredible natural balance and terrific pace. But he was also handy with the ball as well, having played in the halves in Townsville before he came down to Wynnum.

“The deepest sympathies of all the FOGS go out to Terry’s family and friends. He was a terrific bloke who will be missed enormously.”

Butler was a fan favourite at Wynnum, where he scored the first try in the club’s maiden grand final win in 1982.

During his time with the Seagulls, he played alongside internationals including Wally Lewis, Rod Morris, Colin Scott, Bob Lindner, Greg Dowling and Miles.

He also played in Wynnum Manly’s 1984 premiership-winning team.
