The Queensland Universities team produced a demolition job at Suzuki Stadium, Langlands Park on Saturday, beating NSW Universities 40-6.
Under coach Gary O’Brien, the student Maroons put together twin halves to score 20 points in each 40-minute stanza to win for the third-consecutive year over NSW.
Easts Tigers’ Intrust Super Cup centre Jamie Anderson was the star, scoring two tries including one 40m solo effort that nabbed him the man of the match award.
The Queenslanders started with a bit of good fortune when captain Ethan Price scored off a grubber ricochet after just three minutes.
Then clever Toowoomba half Jarrod Lee dummied his way over from a scrum to make it 10-0 after 12 minutes.
But the Maroons then had to make their own luck, with NSW having several opportunities in Queensland’s red zone for the next 20 minutes.
But the home side refused to quit, and they were rewarded when they finally got some field position just before halftime.
Anderson went over for his first try in the 36th minute, while right on halftime Price crashed over from close in to make it 20-0 at the break.
NSW got what they had been looking for just after halftime when front rower Robert Tuliatu scored to make it 20-6.
But eight minutes later, teenager Kobe Tararo burrowed over on a play designed by Queensland assistant coach Mark Tookey, and the 20-point lead was restored.
When Anderson jinked his way over from 40m out with 20 minutes to go, the game was over.
Speedy Tweed Heads’ winger David Sheridan stretched the defence to score in the 66th minute, and Queensland centre Mick O’Keefe made it 40 with a try before fulltime.
