The Queensland Pacific Island Cultural Carnival (QPICC) is a three-day rugby league carnival celebrating the cultural heritage of Queensland-based Pacific Island people.
QNHEWMRL (Maori), RLSQ (Samoa), QPNG (PNG), QCIRL (Cook Islands), QTTRL (Tokoua Tonga), SEQ Tokelau Sports and a new addition this year representing Indigenous Australia will all take part in the annual tournament administered by the QRL’s South East Division.
As well as the Open Men’s division, which will see the QNHEWMRL Maori team return to defend their 2015 title; Under 14 Boys, Under 16 Boys and Under 18 Boys will all contest for a title.
For the first time, a Women’s competition has also been included this year.
The event will kick off this Friday afternoon (October 28) and games will continue all day Saturday, with the tournament to conclude with presentations following the completion of the Men’s Open final on Sunday, October 30.
After losing the Men’s open final to QNHEWMRL Maori last year, the QLD PNG Rugby League side are aiming to win back the title.
“We are looking at regaining the QPICC title after having lost it to the Maoris in the final last year. With that in mind, we believe we have a strong team that will be able to do just that,” QLD PNG Rugby League head coach and selector Elias Paiyo said.
The QPICC carnival will be held at Bill Norris Oval, Beenleigh and rugby league fans are encouraged to come along.
Entry fees for the three days are as follows:
Friday: Entry is a gold coin donation
Saturday: $5 (children under 14 free)
Sunday: $5 (children under 14 free)
