Queensland Maroons and Kangaroos team-mates Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Darius Boyd are in the running to be crowned the best player in the world.

The Melbourne duo and Brisbane Broncos fullback have been announced on the four-man shortlist for the 2016 Golden Boot award.

They are joined in the running by North Queensland Cowboys and New Zealand Kiwis forward Jason Taumalolo.

Maroons and Australia skipper Smith is the only player out of the four to have won the award previously (in 2007).

Cronk has already been named the 2016 Dally M Player of the Year (alongside Taumalolo) and was also crowned the Four Nations Player of the Tournament.

Fellow Queensland half Johnathan Thurston won the coveted award for a record third time last year after previously claiming the honour in both 2013 and 2011.

The winner will be announced in January.
