Star halfback Daly Cherry-Evans has been named Jamie Lyon's successor as Manly Sea Eagles captain for the 2017 season, with Kangaroos forward Jake Trbojevic named vice captain.
“Daly has been a standout during our pre-season. He is a natural leader and was an obvious choice for us as our next captain," Manly coach Trent Barrett said when making the announcement late last week.
“Jake is our vice-captain and being only 22 years old, the experience he will gain in this role alongside Daly gives us a long two long term leaders who can take this club to where it needs to be.”
Cherry-Evans – an international for Australia and former Queensland Maroons representative – was a member of Manly's 2011 premiership-winning side and a Clive Churchill Medallist in 2013, and said he was honoured to lead the side.
“I really was quite surprised when Trent told me,” Cherry-Evans said.
“There was such a large group of players to choose from and I’m really quite chuffed that it’s me that’s going to lead this side into really good days I believe.
“I love this club and I certainly am proud to lead out such a strong group of men and an outstanding football team this year.”
