The CQ Capras snapped a seven-game home losing streak in Round 3, posting a 12-10 win over defending premiers the Burleigh Bears at Browne Park on Saturday night.
In was has been described as one of their gutsiest performances in recent times, the home side were trailing 10-0 early in the second half before they managed to turn the tide in their favour.
Capras coach Kim Williams couldn’t hide his pride at fulltime.
“That was a good feeling down in the sheds and I think the crowd really enjoyed that one,” Williams told the Rockhampton Morning Bulletin.
“It had a bit of everything with a pretty thrilling finish with one finally going our way.
“Really pleased with how smart we were. We controlled that second half pretty well and were willing to grind it out. Once we got in front we were great in closing it out error free.
“I pretty well live every play, so I enjoyed that one. It is why I do the job.”
In his first game of the year, winger Chanel Seigafo provided two great finishes in the corner to bag a double.
His match winner was an epic as he soared horizontally to latch onto a Maipele Morseu kick. On the other flank, Ken Tofilau took his tally to six tries in three games.
Williams however heaped plenty of praise on hooker Krys Freeman after the game, with the former Newcastle Knight impressing with his workload in defence and all-round direction.
"Krys got my man of the match,” Williams said.
“It is those little one percenters. If he doesn't make that chase down the sideline, we are in deep trouble.
"He was impressive.”
For the injury-hit Bears, the effort was again there as they continue to attempt to mount a premiership defence this year – but the execution was lacking.
The side – who alongside Gold Coast rival Tweed Heads – are yet to notch a win this season and have struggled to score points as well.
However, with new combinations leading them on the field and young local league players making the step up to Cup level – the side will need time to find their best form.
Next week, the Capras will travel to the Gold Coast’s Cbus Stadium to play Tweed Heads in a curtain-raiser to the Titans v Cowboy match, while the Bears will host the Souths Logan Magpies.
