After a three going winless in the first three rounds, the Burleigh Bears were finally able to earn themselves a mark in the win column after beating Souths Logan Magpies 37-14 in enemy territory.

Winger Callum Boomer led the way for the Bears with two tries, while also slotting five conversions and a penalty goal.

This effort was backed up by his team-mates who ran in four more tries; with Brodie Hannon, Kai O’Donnell, Rhian Stowers and Bodhi Burt crossing the line.

Harry Fitzhugh added a field goal for good measure when the scores were tight.

Boomer now sits as the second overall Mal Meninga Cup point scorers ladder with 44.

“It’s a great relief, especially after coming so close after a two-point, two-point and a six-point loss, it’s good to finally have that one under the belt,” coach Ali Brown said.

Brown credits an attitude adjustment by his players for the win over a dominant Souths Logan Magpies squad, who were leading the competition after the first three weeks.

“They knew they had to up their game, or they might have been put on notice and maybe not selected for the final week,” Brown said.

Brown hopes the result will inspire his team, as he believes it’s still early enough to turn their season around.

“We’re just trying to stick to the processes, just making sure that everyone knows there’s still an opportunity that if a couple of the results go our way we may slide into the top four,” Brown said.

“If not, as long as the kids are developing then that’s amazing really.”

This weekend, the Bears take on a Northern Pride team who are coming off their second loss of the season to the East Tigers.

The NQ side sit in ninth spot on the ladder with two wins and two losses, while the Bears are in 12th position.

The two sides will meet on Saturday, April 1, at Barlow Park. Kick off will be 12.05pm.
