The West Brisbane Panthers stretched out their winning streak to four in a row with a great win over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls 8-4 in Round 4 of the BRL A Grade In Safe Hands Cup over the weekend.
Although the Panthers have so far enjoyed a perfect start to the season, their coach Wayne Weeks is not 100% satisfied.
While he admits his side’s defence has been brilliant, he thinks there needs to be improvement in the attack.
“We have been defending well and we have a good attitude in defence,” Weeks said.
“The boys are lacking gel in attack, but we will improve as the season goes and we will work on it individually and get more confidence in attack.”
The score was 4-0 to the Seagulls at halftime and it was a tough physical battle between the two sides.
Weeks was pleased his players could get away with a win after a great attacking period in the second half.
“The game was a physical arm wrestle and the team are comfortable in the arm wrestle … (but) the Seagulls scored just before halftime,” Weeks said.
“We had confidence in our defence and an attitude to work for each other we got us through this ugly game.
“For 15 minutes in the second half we came good and that’s where we scored our two tries, but then went back into what we were doing before.”
There are areas the Panthers need to work on, but their coach is confident his side will make those improvements.
“We will be working on those areas and I know it will improve. We are positive about what we do and accountable about what we do,” Weeks said.
“We try our best to improve each week but we don’t talk results but improvement and developing.”
The Panthers will travel to the Logan Brothers home ground this weekend and will be preparing for another tough game.
“Logan are a very physical side at their ground, we are not complacent. It will be another tough game as there are no easy games in this competition,” Weeks said.
“You have to turn up each week and be consistent to win.”
This past weekend, Logan Brothers were able to get over the Valley Diehards in a nail-biter 20-16 and the Redcliffe Dolphins proved too strong for the Ipswich Jets 52-10.
