The Sunshine Coast Falcons produced a dominating effort last Saturday, accounting for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls with a big 42-12 win in their Mal Meninga Cup game at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Lachlan Langton led the team with two tries, with tries from Zac Green, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, Aidan Young, Wyatt Reynolds, Mateus Chankay and Cameron Saunders adding to the effort. Young capped off his night with five conversions.

“Each boy has a licence to play what’s in front of them, and score if the opportunity is on,” coach Jamie Vogler said.

Defensively, the Falcons managed to keep the Seagulls to just two tries – both scored by Ryan O’Keefe.

An impressive effort according to Vogler, considering his squad was down by five regular players.

“They boys are starting to gel and know their positions now,” Vogler said.

“We introduced a different half this week … and they guys who haven’t been getting much of a run have really stepped up.”

While proud of his squad so far, Vogler knows that improvements can be made, especially when it comes to completions.

“Our completions were about 50% so our aim is 80%, that’s a goal we’re trying to shoot for this year,” Vogler said.

The Falcons now face another winless opponent in the Central Crows, who are coming off a last-minute break after their Round 5 match against the Mackay Cutters was postponed due the Cyclone Debbie.

Despite facing a low standing opponent, coach Vogler said he would not change the way his team prepared this week as they continue to focus on discipline.

“I haven’t watched any video on the Crows yet, but it’s exactly the same preparation,” Vogler said.

“If we go in there cocky and over confident, they will give us a really good shock.”

The Sunshine Coast v Crows will take place on Sunday, April 9, with kick-off at 11.30am, while Wynnum Manly play the Redcliffe Dolphins Sunday. Their match at BMD Kougari Oval will begin at 11.50am.
