Falcons again thwart the Hunters

by melbournestorm.com.au and QRL Media

The Falcons moved into second spot on the Intrust Super Cup ladder following a strong 38-14 win over the PNG Hunters at Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday.

The home side struck the first blow in the third minute and never looked back, leading 14-4 at the break before running away with a 24-point win.

Storm PNG recruit Justin Olam scored a 26th minute try against his old team, but it was youngster Brandon Smith that stole the show.

Smith played 55 minutes at hooker before shifting to the lock position.

As well as scoring a try of his own in the second half, he was instrumental in guiding the Falcons to victory.

“Young Smithy was fantastic, that is the best game of footy he’s played for us,” Falcons coach Craig Ingebrigtsen said.

“I am sure all Melbourne Storm supporters will be proud of him. He did a great job, played the 80 minutes and was terrific.

“He is not the 20s-style mould of player because when they come out of 20s, they take a long time to get up to make that jump. He has taken it and embraced playing against men, he takes them on.

“I am really impressed with him.”

Winger Mathew Soper-Lawler was amongst the try scorers, crossing for a double – while for the Hunters, fullback Bland Abavu also scored a double for his team.

Sunshine Coast will now look to continue their four game winning run when they host the CQ Capras on Sunday.

The PNG Hunters are at home for Round 7 and will host the top-of-the-table Redcliffe Dolphins on Sunday afternoon.
