The Souths Logan Magpies finally rewarded their home fans this season, earning their first win at Davies Park after beating the Norths Devils 42-22 yesterday.

The Magpies attacking efforts were led by prop forward Joe Ofahengaue and Daniel Russell with two tries apiece. Other scores came from Sam Scarlett, Matthew Minto and Jamayne Isaako.

In addition to his try, Issaako added six conversions.

“We started really well, nice and physical early which we needed to be,” Magpies coach Jon Buchanan said.

Despite the final outcome, the match was competitive from the very start, with the Devils answering all the Souths tries with scores of their own in the first half from Dalton Phillips, David Faamita and Michael Lucas. However, they could only manage the one second-half try to Kalolo Saitaua. Halfback Todd Murphy slotted three conversions and is now tied for fourth in the top point scorers race.

According to Norths Devils coach Mark Gliddon, while they tried to catch up on the score sheet, it was the Souths enthusiasm all game long that his team just could not match.

“It’s an 80-minute game, we played for 20 minutes,” Gliddon said.

“In that 20 minutes I thought we did okay, but for the rest of the game I thought we were pretty poor.”

While it may have been the Magpies offensive prowess that delighted the home fans, it was their defensive ability that ultimately won them the game as they effectively shut down the Devils in the second half.

“All you can do is preach it to your players that you want them to be nice and resilient defensively, and hopefully they turn up for each other, and I thought we did that,” Buchanan said.

“All of them were on their feet, not just our guys but their guys too. For everyone to turn out and do their jobs, that’s pleasing as a coach.”

With the results in the books, both coaches spoke highly of each other and their squads.

“I think we needed a game like this,” Buchanan said.  “No disrespect to our opposition over the last couple of weeks, but they weren’t the quality of Norths, and I thought we were ready for the challenge of them, and we got a result.”

Meanwhile, Gliddon believes he and his squad can learn a lot from matching up against a sizable opponent like the Magpies.

“Souths always tend to turn up for us, and they are hard to beat at Davies Park,” he said.

“They’re a good footy team, and if they stay fit and healthy, they’ll be up there at the end of the year.”

The Magpies are back at home this weekend and will host the Mackay Cutters at Davies Park on Sunday at 2pm.

The Devils go back home to Bishop Park for their Sunday match where they will take on the as yet winless Tweed Heads Seagulls at 3pm.
