Dolphins defence too strong for Seagulls

Reigning premiers the Redcliffe Dolphins were too strong for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls last weekend winning 26-6, with the result seeing them sitting nicely in second place on the In Safe Hands Cup ladder.

The Dolphins scored 20 unanswered points in the first half of their game and really dazzled the Seagulls side.

Dolphins coach Daniel Green was pleased with his side’s great defensive performance in this game.

“Our defence is where we want it to be and it is what is going to win you games in this competition,” Green said.

“Our completion rate has not been great, but in this game, we had about 75% to 80% completion and our halves controlled the game.”

The Dolphins worked hard throughout the pre-season and Green was happy his players were being rewarded for their effort.

“The whole team really performed and worked hard on their contact during the preseason,” he said. “It was good to see the players being rewarded for that hard work.”

With Green commending his whole team, he was particularly pleased with lock Jaz Nahu-Main and halfback Zach Strasser.

“Jaz is a really under rated player and goes unnoticed to some people. But as the coach he is a consistent player and made a difference when he came on the field,” Green said.

“Zach took control of the game and was really great off the ball.”

The Dolphins strive to be a dominant club across all three grades and Green has been working hard with his players to make sure they reach their goal of getting into first grade.

“We worked hard in the off season on being consistent. The players in reserve grade want to play first grade,” Green said.

“With the team changing every week, we made sure they are all doing the right thing so they can reach their goal.

“It is a stronger comp compared to last year, but we as a club are focused on the first grade comp and keeping the club strong over all three grades.”

With the Easter break coming up this weekend, the Dolphins enjoy the time off and hope to come back refreshed for their round 6 clash against the Logan Brothers.

“The players will be nice and refreshed. We will have the weekend off and back to business on Monday; Logan Brothers are a big-bodied side and we will be preparing for a tough game,” Green said.

In other Round 5 games, the Ipswich Jets added another win to their belt getting a 42-30 win over the Easts Tigers.

The unstoppable West Brisbane Panthers have extended their winning streak to five, scring a 34-22 result over the Logan Brothers in a come from behind win.
