Highlights + Wrap: Magpies v Cutters

Magpies surge home to record hefty win over Cutters

by QRL Media

Another second-half surge has seen the Souths Logan Magpies post an impressive score – this time resulting in a 42-24 win over the Mackay Cutters.

The final scoreline was not a fair reflection of the overall closeness of the game, with game relatively tight throughout – including at halftime where the Cutters in fact held a 14-12 lead.

Connor Toia came in to play at halfback in place of the injured Sam Scarlett for the Magpies and fit right into the action.

It was the home side though that got on the scoreboard first, with hooker Travis Waddell producing a dummy at the line to fool the defenders before ducking over.

The Cutters responded almost immediately through Nathan Saumalu after the forward pack forced the Magpies into an error at the scrum, earning them the ball back.

They got in front after former Magpie Jack Joass pounced on a Setaimata Sa kick through.

But the lead changed again when big Joe Ofahengaue proved too hard to stop when reaching out to score close to the line.

Cooper Bambling’s four-pointer right on halftime gave the Cutters the lead back, but that would be the last time they held it.

The Magpies big men combined for their opening try of the second half, with a Ofahengaue bust through the middle was followed up by Jaydn Su’a who went over for the first of his two tries. The second came just eight minutes after with a good run on the left side from Scott Doyle setting him up nicely.

But Braden Uele took it upon himself to get the Cutters back into the game and carried almost half the Magpies team on his back before struggling to get the ball down for a try in the 54th minute.

A hard-running Joass notched his second try soon after and the scores were locked at 24-24 with 20 minutes remaining on the clock. Nicholas Hynes missed the conversion attempt and unfortunately for the Cutters was only able to add the extras twice out of five attempts.

His Souths Logan goal-kicking counterpart Jamayne Isaako however booted seven from seven and currently sits fifth on the Leader Pointers Scorers table with 56 points scored so far.

But once Simione Fatafehi scored for the home side in the 66th minute to hit the front again, it was game over for the Cutters, with the Magpies running in two more tries to Doyle after a great elusive run from fullback Isaako and an easy try to Sam Lavea right before fulltime.

Next weekend, the Magpies are at home to an improving Ipswich Jets outfit while the Cutters will face another challenge when they host the Easts Tigers.
