The chase for the FOGS Under 20s Cup is over for the Sunshine Coast Falcons, after falling just short of playoff contention despite winning their last three matches in a row.

The Falcons ended their season with a 48-10 win over the Central Queensland Capras on Sunday at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Captain Baidon Cooper lead the Falcons with two tries, with additional four-pointers from Jake Egan, Baylee Byrne-Perrett, Isaak Pedersen, Brody Riseborough, Hayden Lewis-Boyer, Joe Curran and Beau Condon.

Liam Taylor scored six conversions, while Cooper added to his points effort with a conversion of his own.

On the CQ side, Martin Crough and Ryan Flintham scored tries, while Tycer O’Dell slotted one conversion.

While happy that his team started to gel by the end of the season, Falcons coach Mick Buckley believed there were still improvements his players would have to make if they wanted to play post the FOGS Under 20s Cup season.

“The reason why we’ve never made the final is probably our mistakes,” Buckley said.

“They’re trying to score points off plays instead of being patient. When they understand how to play patient football, they will be a much better football side.”

Being that this is the first year the Cup has gone statewide, adjusting to that added to the challenges the Falcons faced.

However, Buckley said he felt this new dimension added to the experience for the players this year and was a welcomed addition when it came to facing competition on the field.

“Every win you take, you have to earn,” Buckley said.

“I think it’s a very even competition; it’s just that some sides started better than others.”

With the expected departures of players like Risenborough and Curran next season, the Sunshine Coast may have a challenge on their hands, but it’s one that Buckley understands and is ready for.

“That’s Under 20s football, it’s about bringing them through and developing them, and hopefully (you can) turn them into an Intrust Super Cup player or an NRL player,” Buckley said.

While the season FOGS Under 20s Cup season comes to a close in the next few weeks, the Falcons are not done with football yet as the team will take part in the FOGS Colts Challenge competition.

According to Buckley, each player will go and play at their local football clubs in the meantime, before being brought back to the Falcons for a pre-competition mini pre-season to keep everyone’s fitness level up.
