In a game where both teams were fighting to halt losing streaks, it was the CQ Capras who came out on top, walking out of BMD Kougari Oval victorious for the first time in three games against Wynnum Manly.

The game was in the Capras hands for the most part, as the side were able play controlled, measured football after a period that saw four Capras tries scored before the Seagulls found a way to respond.

The initial 10 minutes suggested a different ball game however, with CQ’s Jack Madden soccering a loose ball forward to open the account, before Wynnum’s John Te Reo sliced through untouched between the post in return.

Handling errors would be the difference between the two teams in the first half though – as the Wynnum back three were troubled by the awkward kicks throughout the half that gifted several attacking possessions to the Capras.

It would be a Chanel Seigafo first-half double that really put the visitors in control, the latter coming off a scrum set-piece inside the final 90 seconds.

The Capras playmakers found space a number of times down the Wynnum right-hand defence that was missing suspended right wing Peter Gubb as well as starting custodian Daniel Ogden due to injury, but Seagulls captain Mitchell Frei insisted the personnel changes were not the cause for the defensive struggles.

“The changes definitely aren’t to blame,” Frei said. “We had a really good pre-season, the whole squad training together and we’re all on the same page with our structures.

“Injuries happen and everyone who comes into the side knows the role they need to play.”

The second half got worse for the Seagulls when Capras prop Oliver Percy managed to outwrestle three Seagulls defenders for the first of his two second half tries, besting a Wynnum try-line defence that has been a strength for the side for much of the season.

The game became a fight again when the Seagulls looked to their skipper for inspiration. Frei hit and spun his way over in the 52nd minute after a swift delivery from hooker Mitchell Cronin.

The deliveries continued from Cronin, who spotted a gap in the Capras defensive line before shooting through and dishing off to five-eighth Matt Seamark who would go over for a try that would see the Welsh international score the most Intrust Super Cup points for a single club.

The converted try also put the game mathematically back into the contest for the Seagulls following a poor goal-kicking performance for the Capras, but back-to-back Capras tries to Maipele Morseau (69th minute) and Percy (73rd minute) saw the Capras close up shop, despite an impressive Jack Goodesell try for Wynnum before the game’s end.

“That was our best performance all year, no doubt,” Capras coach Kim Williams said after the victory.

“We brought in a few new guys this week in order to spark something, we felt we had a hit a bit of a flat spot in recent weeks.

“I felt we had a few too many players who’d gotten a bit too comfortable. We rattled the cage this week and it worked.”

Williams also praised the improved attack of his Capras unit, noting the increased team cohesion and highlighting the impressive grunt work from his starting front rowers.

The Capras will look to take their form into a clash with the Easts Tigers next weekend, while Wynnum Manly will hope to regroup to take on a visiting Townsville Blackhawks side next week.
